Marriage & family life
(Re)discover the beauty of being persons in families, in the very image and likeness of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are made in, through and for family, simply because our ultimate meaning and purpose is Love. Family is everything, because love is everything!
THEME 2022: LOVE IS THE WAY
In that spirit of WMOF 2022, our own diocesan theme this year places Jesus at the center of attention as the Lord who frees and redeems us to walk in love as we ought to. Jesus is Love because God is Love. He is also 'the Way'. Given the two most important commandments of our faith, it should come as no surprise to us all that 'Love is the Way'.
WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES
WMOF, created by Pope John Paul II, was first held in Rome on 8 and 9 October 1994. It was promoted by the Pontifical Council for the Family. This Vatican body was disbanded and merged with the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life. A World Meeting of Families has therefore been held since 1994 every three years and in different places around the world. The event includes an international Theological-Pastoral Congress at the start and ending, in the presence of the Pope, with a vigil and Festival of Families along with a great final Eucharistic celebration. The theme of this year's celebration is 'Family Love: A Vocation and a Path to Holiness'.
The Archbishop has decided to use this as an opportunity for the local church to deepen her reflection on the outcomes of the 2019 Archdiocesan Synod, using as a lens the Synodal themes of listening and journeying. One way for us do this is to look for commonalities between the 2023 Synod themes and the outcomes of our 2019 Synod. Put differently, when we place the 2023 Synod themes in dialogue with the 2019 Synod outcomes, what might they have to say to one another?
As the Marriage & Family Life Office and Committee lay foundations, we acknowledge that some parishes have strong family ministry movements in place; some have none, and others have been stumbling over the Covid-19 dynamics. Indeed, the Corona phenomenon exposed many weaknesses in the church from top to bottom, and placed the ‘church of the home’ aka ‘domestic church’ in a fresh spotlight. Regardless of the state of your parish and/or home in matters of marriage and family support and enrichment, refresh your minds and hearts, and resolve to build and rebuild with us the family and families of God here in the Archdiocese and beyond.
In one way or another, daily life is family life. Let's get real, and talk about the beautiful mess that is family life.
